Chess.com Game Review vs Chess Coach (and Lichess)

By · Updated

Chess.com's Game Review is the natural pick if you play on Chess.com and want a polished review right where you play. On Platinum or Diamond it's unlimited, and on Diamond the Coach explains every move. Chess Coach covers a narrower need: it reviews your finished Chess.com and Lichess games inside Claude or ChatGPT and explains the key moments in plain words, from free (1 review a day) to $3.99/month (10 a day). Lichess's computer analysis is the free option with the most room.

Chess.com is a great site, and Chess Coach doesn't try to replace it. This page is about which tool fits which need.

Where Chess.com Game Review is the better choice

If you play only on Chess.com and want everything in one place, its own review is hard to beat. The daily limits are covered in how many free game reviews Chess.com gives you.

Where Lichess is the better choice

Lichess and Chess.com also compute accuracy in different ways; Lichess's own accuracy page says there's no universally accepted method. Don't expect the two numbers to match.

Where Chess Coach is the better choice

The honest trade-offs. You need Claude or ChatGPT and you have to add the connector (how to connect). Chess Coach is available in Claude’s directory and OpenAI’s plugin directory. Open its listing, install it and sign in with your Chess Coach account. It only reviews finished games. Stockfish provides every evaluation, but your assistant writes the words, so if an explanation sounds off, check the line on the board.

Who should use which

A free alternative to Chess.com Game Review: what you actually get

"Free" means different things here. Lichess gives the most engine analysis at no cost, without written coaching. Independent sites such as Chessigma and Chess It Up describe themselves as free with no daily limits, running Stockfish in your browser (their own sites, October 2026). Chess Coach's free plan is smaller in volume, one review a day, but each one comes with plain-language explanations and a board you can practice on. Skip anything that promises to unlock Chess.com's paid review: Chess.com's extension policy bars scraping and backend workarounds, and prohibited extensions are listed among the reasons an account can be closed.

Chess Coach is independent and not affiliated with Chess.com or Lichess.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lichess game review better than Chess.com?

They're good at different things. Lichess is free, with deep server analysis for 40 games a day and unlimited Learn from your mistakes. Chess.com's Game Review is more guided, and on Diamond the Coach explains every move. The two sites compute accuracy differently, so scores won't match.

Is there a free alternative to Chess.com Game Review?

Yes. Lichess's computer analysis is free, several independent sites run Stockfish in your browser at no cost, and Chess Coach's free plan gives one explained review a day inside Claude or ChatGPT.

Is Chess.com Diamond worth it for game review?

If you want unlimited reviews and Coach explanations on every move without leaving Chess.com, Diamond is the only plan that includes both (Chess.com Help Center, October 2026). If you only need the why behind two or three moments per game, a free option may be enough.

Does Chess Coach replace Chess.com?

No. Chess Coach doesn't host games. It reads your finished public games from Chess.com or Lichess and explains them in Claude or ChatGPT, so you keep playing where you already play.

Can Chess Coach review a game I'm still playing?

No. It only reviews finished games and never helps with games in progress.
