How long to get to 1200 chess rating: my game 1237

By · Updated

How long to get to a 1200 chess rating? For me it was 1,237 rapid games and 349 days. My first recorded game, on January 10, 2024, finished at 631. On December 24, 2024, I beat CrunchySheet (1249) with White in game 1237, and my rating went from 1196 to 1205, the first time it had ever been at 1200 or above.

Before anyone uses that as a timetable: it's one person's record, played as ten-minute rapid on Chess.com, with plenty of losses in it. The useful part isn't the number of games. It's what the crossing game looked like, because it wasn't a clean one.

How long to get to 1200 chess rating, in my numbers

Milestone Game Date
First game (631) 1 January 10, 2024
First time at 1000 or more 232 February 28, 2024
First time at 1100 or more 656 July 4, 2024
First time at 1200 or more 1237 December 24, 2024

The step from 1100 to 1200 took 581 games, almost as many as the 656 it took to climb from 631 to 1100, and far more than the 424 between 1000 and 1100. The record of my first 1,237 games is 575 wins, 628 losses and 34 draws. In other words, I lost more games than I won on the way to 1200.

The days just before were good. Game 1234 was a win to 1193, game 1235 a loss to 1185, and game 1236 a win against Forbidden_Wargod, rated 1301, to 1196. Then came this one. All three games were on December 24; the weekly diary for that Christmas week has the full list.

The English Defense is Black answering 1.d4 with ...b6 and putting the bishop on b7, aiming down the long diagonal. That bishop matters later. I set up with Bf4, Nd2 and Ngf3, then pushed e4 on move 7. The opening went fine until I recaptured on e5 with the wrong piece on move 10: Stockfish wanted the pawn, I took with the bishop, and the evaluation went from +0.88 to −0.57.

Game 1237, move 13: my bishop on e5 is attacked by the knight on d7
Queen from b3 to a4 Bishop from e5 to d6; attacks the rook on f8

Black's knight on d7 was attacking my bishop on e5. I moved my queen to a4 and didn't deal with it. Black took the bishop with the knight, and that capture also attacked my knight on f3. Stockfish's evaluation went from −0.23 to −2.30. Its choice was Bd6, moving the attacked bishop to a square where it attacks Black's rook on f8. When I rechecked the position, the engine didn't show a single knock-out tactic after my move; it simply rated the knight-for-bishop trade on e5 as clearly better for Black.

Position 2: the knight that was blocking the diagonal

Game 1237, move 14: Black's bishop on b7 looks down the diagonal to g2
Knight from f3 takes the knight on e5 Pawn from d4 takes the knight on e5; attacks the knight on f6

This is the blunder that matters. I had two ways to recapture on e5: the pawn or the knight. I took with the knight. But my knight on f3 was the only piece standing between Black's bishop on b7 and my pawn on g2. The moment it moved, Black played 14...Bxg2, taking the pawn and attacking my rook on h1, which had no defender. The evaluation fell to −5.96. The pawn recapture, dxe5, would also have attacked Black's knight on f6, and the engine had it at about −2.5: still worse for me, but much better than what I got.

The move I made looks completely natural. A knight recaptures towards the centre. The problem is what it was doing before it moved, and that is the hardest kind of mistake for me to spot, because nothing about the move itself is wrong.

Position 3: one correct capture

After 15.Rg1 I castled queenside and grabbed a pawn on a7. Black's 17...Rc7 was a blunder, and the evaluation came back to −2.68. Then I found the engine's move.

Game 1237, move 18: my pawn on d4 can take on c5
Pawn takes the pawn on c5; attacks the pawn on b6, which has no defender The same capture is Stockfish's choice

The capture attacks Black's undefended pawn on b6. Black recaptured with the rook, 18...Rxc5, which the analysis marks as a mistake, and the evaluation improved to −1.33. Then I took the bishop on b7 with my queen and Black took my bishop on b5 with the rook. By the engine's numbers I was still worse, at about −1.6, but the game had become playable again.

Position 4: the queen offer I could take

On move 20 Black put the queen on b8, right next to my queen on b7. The analysis marks that as a blunder: the evaluation went from −1.89 to +4.44.

Game 1237, move 21: the queens face each other on the b-file
Knight takes the knight on f6 with check Queen takes the queen on b8, pinning the rook on f8 to the king

Stockfish slightly preferred taking the queens first. I took the knight with check first, and the evaluation stayed at about +4.5. In fact the game reached the same position as the engine's line, just in a different order: 21.Nxf6+ Bxf6 22.Qxb8 Rxb8 23.Nd7. After 23...Bg5+ 24.Rxg5 Ra8 25.Rxb5, Black abandoned the game. I still had over four minutes on my clock.

What the crossing game taught me

My accuracy of 84.4% hides the shape of the game. It contained two blunders in two consecutive moves, a stretch where the engine had me at almost −6, and a recovery that depended as much on Black's mistakes as on mine being fixed. I reached 1200 in a game I could easily have lost.

The specific lesson is from move 14. When I'm choosing between two captures, I want to ask what each capturing piece is currently blocking or guarding. The pawn on d4 wasn't blocking anything important. The knight on f3 was blocking a whole diagonal into my king's side. That question costs a few seconds and would have saved this game's worst moment.

What happened after 1200

It didn't stick at once. I stayed at 1200 or higher for ten games, up to game 1246, and then lost game 1247 and dropped to 1198. Over the following weeks my rating moved back and forth around the line: 1184 after game 1249, 1202 after game 1251, 1185 after game 1255, 1214 after game 1260.

Over the longer run, the line held more than it didn't. Of the 880 games in my record after game 1237, only 53 finished with my rating below 1200, and my peak was 1385 on November 23, 2025. Those are the numbers of one account, not a promise for anyone else.

For a broader plan, my guide on going from 800 to 1200 covers the broader plan, and the previous milestone, reaching 1100 in game 656, shows the earlier crossing. The full series is on the journey hub. You can also review your own crossing game like this with Chess Coach in Claude or ChatGPT.
