# What does a 1000 rating on Chess.com mean? Week 17 of my journey

> Week 17 of my chess journey: 997 → 1017 in 19 rapid games (9 wins, 10 losses). What a 1000 rating on Chess.com looks like, game by game.

From April 29 to May 5, 2024 I played 19 rapid games and went from **997 to 1017**: 9 wins, 10 losses,
no draws. That put me back above 1000 after two weeks just under it. So what does a 1000 rating on
Chess.com mean in practice? Looking at this week through Stockfish, it means games that swing back and
forth all the time: I made **48 blunders** in 19 games, my opponents made 50, and whoever made the last
big one usually lost.

## The week in numbers

| | |
|---|---|
| Games | 19, all 20-minute rapid |
| Wins / losses / draws | 9 / 10 / 0 |
| Rating | 997 → 1017 (+20) |
| Average accuracy | 76.6 % |
| Blunders (Stockfish) | 48 |
| Most played openings | Accelerated London System (4), King's Pawn Opening (2), Modern Defense with 1 d4 (2) |

The colour split tells most of the story. With White I scored 7 wins and 4 losses, almost always with
1.d4 setups, and the Accelerated London went 3–1. With Black I won only 2 of 8. The week also had an
ugly middle: from May 1 to May 4 I lost six games in a row (#419 to #424), and then won the next four on
that same Saturday. My opponents were rated between 1005 and 1191, 1083 on average, so most of the time
I was the lower-rated player.

There is another number I don't love. Six of my ten losses are logged by Chess.com as "game abandoned",
which means I left the game instead of playing on or resigning. One of them, #424 against ChessIlya25,
ended after only three moves of mine. And in five losses (#414, #417, #422, #423 and #429) Stockfish says
I reached a position with at least an 80 % chance of winning. At this level, I was rarely outplayed from
the first move. I lost games I had already won.

## Three moments that show what 1000-level chess looks like

### 1. A double attack, but not the right one

Game #412, White against krzysztofmielczarek (1144). I was clearly better, +2.39, and I found a capture
that looked like a tactic.

> **Move 16: one knight move would uncover my rook against Black's queen**
> Position (FEN): `r4rk1/1p2bpp1/p2pbn1p/8/1Pq1PB2/P1N2N2/5PPP/2RQ1RK1 w - - 0 16`
> Played: Bxd6 — Bishop takes the pawn on d6 and attacks the bishop on e7, with the rook on f8 behind it
> Better: Nd5 — Knight to d5 attacks the knight on f6 and the undefended bishop on e7, and opens the c-file: my rook on c1 now attacks the queen on c4

16.Bxd6 took a pawn and hit the bishop on e7 with the rook on f8 behind it. That is a double attack: one
move that threatens two things at once. The trouble is that Black had a calm answer, taking my bishop
with the bishop (16...Bxd6 17.Qxd6), a simple trade. The evaluation fell from +2.39 to +0.02, about
equal. Stockfish wanted 16.Nd5. The knight jumps to the centre, attacks the knight on f6 and the
undefended bishop on e7, and, the part I completely missed, it steps off the c-file, so my rook on c1
suddenly attacks the queen on c4. That is a discovered attack: you move one piece and the piece behind it
does the attacking. I still won this one by resignation, but I gave back almost all of my edge
([game on Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/game/live/108118174447)).

### 2. Winning, then a quiet pawn move

Game #414, Black against bimalhembram (1035). Going into move 8, Stockfish rated my position as winning,
-3.82. Then I played a move that did nothing.

> **Move 8: my king is still in the centre and my knight on e4 is alone**
> Position (FEN): `r1b1kb1r/ppp2ppp/2np1q2/8/2Bpn3/1Q5N/PPP2PPP/RNB2RK1 b kq - 3 8`
> Played: b6 — Pawn from b7 to b6
> Better: Nc5 — Knight from e4 to c5, attacking White's queen on b3

8...b6 is a quiet pawn move. The engine's choice, 8...Nc5, moves my knight out of the centre with a
threat: it attacks the queen on b3, so White has to deal with that first. After b6, White's best reply is
Re1. The rook attacks my knight on e4, which has no defender, and pins it: the knight cannot move without
exposing my king, still sitting on e8. The evaluation flipped from -3.82 to +3.88. I didn't finish the
game; it is one of the abandoned ones
([game on Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/game/live/108121193545)).

### 3. An active bishop move that gave White time

Game #416, Black against Jedo1425 (1139). White was a bit better (+1.33) and I wanted to challenge the
knight on d5.

> **Move 11: the quiet h6 was better than the active bishop move**
> Position (FEN): `r1bq1rk1/2p2ppp/p1np1n2/3Np3/1b2P3/3P1N1P/BPP2PP1/R1BQ1RK1 b - - 1 11`
> Played: Be6 — Bishop from c8 to e6, attacking the knight on d5 with the bishop on a2 behind it
> Better: h6 — Pawn from h7 to h6

11...Be6 looks active: it attacks the knight on d5 and, behind it, the bishop on a2. Stockfish says it
turned +1.33 into +5.48. Its main reply for White is 12.c3, which attacks my bishop on b4. The line goes
12...Bc5 13.d4 exd4 14.cxd4 Ba7: White's pawns chase my bishop backwards twice while taking the centre.
The other strong reply, 12.Bg5, attacks my knight on f6 with my queen behind it. The engine's quiet
11...h6 takes the g5 square away from that bishop before it gets there. I won this game anyway, because
my opponent later abandoned it
([game on Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/game/live/108253775273)).

## The lesson of the week

In two of these three positions the better move attacked the enemy queen: directly with Nc5, or by
uncovering a rook with Nd5. In the third, my opponent's best reply attacked one of my pieces. So the
lesson is simple and practical: before I play any move, I want to ask "which of my moves attacks their
queen?" and "which of their moves will attack my pieces next?" A move that attacks the queen forces a
reply, and a move that ignores the opponent's forcing replies hands them the time. At 1000 the gap was
not opening theory. It was skipping those two questions in positions I had already won.

## FAQ

### What does a 1000 rating on Chess.com mean?

In my rapid games it meant evenly matched, error-filled chess. This week my opponents were rated 1005 to 1191, Stockfish counted 48 blunders in my 19 games and 50 in theirs, and I finished 9 wins to 10 losses.

### Do 1000-rated players still blunder a lot?

Yes. I averaged about two and a half blunders per game this week and still gained 20 points, because my opponents blundered just as often.

### Why do 1000-rated players lose games they were winning?

In five of my ten losses I had at least an 80 % chance of winning at some point. Usually one quiet move ignored a forcing reply, like 8...b6 instead of attacking the queen in game #414.
