A 1000 rating on Chess.com means you score about evenly against other Chess.com players rated around 1000 **in that one time class** (rapid, blitz, bullet or daily). It's a Glicko rating inside Chess.com's own player pool, not a FIDE rating and not a fixed skill level. In my own climb (account nacsol3) I reached 1000 in rapid at game #232, and in the 604 rapid games I played between 1000 and 1099, I won 290, lost 293 and drew 21: almost exactly half.

So the rating meaning is relative: "you are about as strong as the other people at 1000 on this site, in this time control." Below is what Chess.com says about how its ratings work, what 1000 does **not** mean, and what games at 1000 actually look like when you run them through Stockfish.

## What a 1000 rating on Chess.com means, in numbers

These are my 604 rapid games played while my rating read between 1000 and 1099 (February 28 to December 19, 2024), analyzed with Stockfish. Most were 10-minute games (449) or 20-minute games (152).

| | My games at 1000–1099 |
|---|---|
| Games | 604 |
| Record | 290 W, 293 L, 21 D (48% wins) |
| Average opponent rating | 1052 |
| Opponents within 100 points of me | 92% of games |
| My average accuracy | 77.6% |
| My blunders per game | 2.21 |
| Games before my first 1000 | 231 (starting from 631) |
| Games from my first 1000 to my first 1100 | 425 |

Two things stand out. First, I won about half my games, which is what a rating is supposed to do: it settles where you win about as often as you lose against the people you're paired with. Second, blunders were the norm. Over 2.2 moves per game dropped at least 15 points of winning chance, Stockfish's threshold for a "blunder" in our analysis ([what blunder, mistake and inaccuracy mean](/answers/inaccuracy-vs-mistake-vs-blunder/)).

## How Chess.com ratings work

Chess.com's Help Center explains the basics ([How do ratings work on Chess.com?](https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8566476-how-do-ratings-work-on-chess-com), checked as of October 2026):

- **Glicko, not Elo.** Chess.com uses the Glicko rating system, which adds a "rating deviation" (RD): a measure of how confident the site is in your rating. Low confidence means bigger swings.
- **One rating per time class.** Each time class has its own rating. A 1000 in rapid says nothing certain about your blitz or daily rating.
- **Your starting point is your choice.** If you have no Live games yet, your first rating comes from the skill level you picked when you created the account. New players see big jumps in their first games until the rating settles.

Chess.com also shows a **percentile** on your Stats page: the percentage of Chess.com members with a rating equal to or lower than yours, for that game type. It appears once the account is at least 7 days old and you have 20 games of that type, with at least one in the last 90 days ([What does percentile mean?](https://support.chess.com/en/articles/8572866-what-does-percentile-mean)). That number, not a forum guess, is the best answer to "how good is my 1000 compared with everyone else". Chess.com doesn't publish a fixed percentile for 1000, so I don't quote one here.

## What a 1000 rating doesn't mean

- **It isn't a FIDE rating.** FIDE ratings use Elo and come from over-the-board tournaments. There's no official conversion. Lichess's documentation says it plainly: ratings can't be directly compared from one server to another, and Lichess ratings are often higher than FIDE or Chess.com ratings ([Lichess rating systems](https://lichess.org/page/rating-systems)). Lichess also starts new players at 1500, which is one reason the numbers differ.
- **It isn't your Game Review number.** The "estimated rating" after a game is a one-game performance guess, not your rating. A 1000 player can get "played like 1800" in a short game where the opponent hung a piece early ([what the estimated rating means](/answers/chess-com-game-review-estimated-rating-meaning/)).
- **It isn't permanent.** My rating crossed 1000 at game #232, I lost the next two games and dropped to 985, and it was 31 games before it read 1000 again ([reaching 1000](/journey/reaching-1000/)). A 50-point swing in a week is normal at this level.

## What games at 1000 look like

At 1000 most people know the rules, have an opening they like and spot simple one-move tactics most of the time. Games are lost to the one time they don't. Here's a typical one: June 17, 2024, 10-minute game, I'm Black against hager876 (1057) in a Scotch Game ([game on Chess.com](https://www.chess.com/game/live/107811478780)). Stockfish has it about equal.

> **Move 8: a free pawn with my king still on e8**
> Position (FEN): `r1b1kb1r/pppp1ppp/2q5/8/4P3/8/PPP2PPP/RNBQ1RK1 b kq - 1 8`
> Played: Qxe4 — Queen takes the pawn on e4
> Better: Bd6 — Bishop to d6, getting ready to castle

**What I played (red arrow):** queen takes the pawn on e4 (Qxe4). A free pawn, and nothing seems to attack my queen.

**What I missed:** White has already castled, and my king is still on e8. A rook to e1 (Re1) attacks my queen along the e-file with my king right behind it. That's a pin: a piece that can't move off the line without exposing a more valuable piece behind it. The queen can't run without leaving the king in check, so I lose it for a rook. My opponent found Re1 right away. Stockfish went from about equal (−0.08) to +6.90 for White, and my winning chances fell from 51% to 7%.

**The better move (green arrow):** bishop to d6 (Bd6), developing a piece and getting ready to castle. Stockfish rates it about equal.

That's what 1000 means in practice: I knew the opening, I knew what a pin was, and I still grabbed a pawn with my king in the center. Your opponent at 1000 makes the same kind of mistake about twice a game, so the player who checks *what can attack this piece on its new square?* usually wins.

## How Chess Coach helps at 1000

Chess Coach is a connector for Claude and ChatGPT that reviews your **finished** Chess.com and Lichess games with Stockfish on our server and explains the key moments in plain words, like the pin above. The board shows the key moments ①②③ with arrows (red for your move, green for the better one), an evaluation graph and a Practice mistakes mode. The free plan includes one in-depth review per day. For a plan built from my 425 games at 1000, read [stuck at 1000 Elo](/guides/stuck-at-1000-elo-chess/); to try it on your own games, see [how to connect it](/connect/) or follow the whole climb in [my chess journey](/journey/).

## FAQ

### Is 1000 a good rating on Chess.com?

It's a real milestone for an adult beginner: it took me 232 rapid games to get there from 631. It also means most of your games are still decided by one or two big mistakes. For where you stand among other players, check the percentile on your Chess.com Stats page.

### Is a 1000 Chess.com rating the same as 1000 FIDE?

No. Chess.com uses the Glicko system on its own pool of players, and FIDE uses Elo for over-the-board games. Lichess's own documentation says ratings can't be compared directly from one server to another, so there's no official conversion.

### Does a 1000 in rapid mean 1000 in blitz?

No. Chess.com keeps a separate rating for each time class (bullet, blitz, rapid, daily), so the same player can be 1000 in rapid and much lower or higher in blitz.

### What does the percentile on my Chess.com Stats page mean?

Chess.com's Help Center defines it as the percentage of members with a rating equal to or lower than yours, per game type. It only shows once you have 20 games of that type, one of them in the last 90 days.

### What should I work on at 1000?

Blunder checks, punishing your opponent's free pieces and converting winning positions. In my games at 1000 both sides blundered about twice a game, so those three habits are worth more than new opening theory.
