There is no official Chess.com MCP server, as far as we could find in October 2026. What exists are open-source community servers that let Claude read Chess.com's free [Published-Data API](https://www.chess.com/news/view/published-data-api): profiles, ratings, monthly game archives and PGNs. They fetch data; none of the Chess.com ones we checked runs a chess engine, so the analysis part needs something else.

An MCP server is a small program that gives an AI assistant tools it can call. The [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro) is the open standard behind it, and Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants support it.

## Chess.com MCP servers at a glance

What we found on GitHub, checked on October 25, 2026. Stars and dates change; the details come from each project's README.

| Project | What it gives Claude | How you run it | License |
|---|---|---|---|
| [pab1it0/chess-mcp](https://github.com/pab1it0/chess-mcp) | Profiles, stats, online status, ongoing games, monthly archives, PGN downloads, clubs, titled players (10 tools) | Locally, with Docker or `uv`, added to Claude Desktop's config | MIT |
| [Gelberm/chess-mcp](https://github.com/Gelberm/chess-mcp) | Player profile and player stats (2 tools) | Locally, with `uvx` straight from GitHub | Not stated |
| [Chess Coach](/connect/) (ours) | Your finished games, Stockfish reviews, an interactive board, opening reports | Remote: paste a URL, sign in | Free plan, paid plans |

pab1it0/chess-mcp is the most established of the open-source options: about 90 stars and a first release (v0.1.0) in November 2025. A handful of smaller repositories with similar names exist too, most with no stars or documentation yet.

## What the Chess.com API can and can't do

Every Chess.com MCP server is limited by the same source. Chess.com's own page on the Published-Data API says it is "read-only data": you can't send moves or commands through it. It also lists what it serves: player profiles, ratings and win/loss stats, monthly game archives and a PGN download for each month. A PGN is the standard text format for a chess game, move by move.

Two practical details from the same page:

- Data can lag. Chess.com says the endpoints refresh at most every 12 to 24 hours (the page gives both figures), so a game you finished minutes ago may not show up straight away.
- No login is involved. It's public data, so a Chess.com MCP server only needs a username, never your password.

What the API doesn't include is analysis. Chess.com's Game Review runs on its site; the public API gives you the moves, not the evaluations. That's the gap people notice when they ask Claude to "analyze my last Chess.com game" through a data-only server.

## Claude and Chess.com: data alone isn't analysis

With pab1it0/chess-mcp connected, Claude can fetch your March games and read the PGN. Ask it which move lost the game and it will answer, fluently. But a language model isn't a chess engine. It rebuilds the position from text and judges it by pattern, so its verdicts can be wrong, and it sometimes suggests moves that aren't legal. We tested that in [Can Claude analyze chess games?](/answers/can-claude-analyze-chess-games/) and [Can Claude play chess?](/answers/can-claude-play-chess/).

The fix is to give Claude an engine too. You can pair a Chess.com data server with a separate [Stockfish MCP server](/answers/stockfish-mcp-server/) on your computer, or use one connector that does both.

## How Chess Coach handles Chess.com games

Chess Coach is a remote MCP server: nothing to install. You add `https://chess-coach-246271308938.europe-west1.run.app/mcp` in Claude under **Customize → Connectors** ([steps](/connect/)), sign in with your email or Google, and say your Chess.com username.

- `list_games` finds your finished Chess.com games and searches your whole history by month, opponent, result, color, time control or opening.
- `review_game` runs Stockfish on our server and shows the key moments ①②③ on an interactive board, with a red arrow for your move and a green arrow for the better one. Claude explains them in plain words.
- `analyze_position` checks any position or idea you want to try, and `opening_report` shows which openings cost you points.

It reads games from the same public API, without your credentials, and only finished games: it never helps with a game in progress. The Free plan includes one in-depth review and 30 position checks a day; Plus ($3.99/month) and Pro ($7.99/month) add more. It also works with ChatGPT through a separate URL. Chess Coach is available in [Claude’s directory](https://claude.ai/directory/chess-coach) and [OpenAI’s plugin directory](https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6ad9e00bd14481918e1bfc260a358e03). Open its listing, install it and sign in with your Chess Coach account.

## FAQ

### Does Chess.com have an official MCP server?

We couldn't find one as of October 2026. The Chess.com MCP servers on GitHub are community projects built on Chess.com's free Published-Data API, which is public and read-only.

### Do I need my Chess.com password to connect Claude to Chess.com?

No. Chess.com's Published-Data API serves public data without logging in, so these servers only need your username. Chess Coach also never asks for your chess password.

### Can a Chess.com MCP server analyze my games?

A data server like pab1it0/chess-mcp fetches profiles, stats and PGNs, but doesn't run an engine. Claude can comment on what it fetches, but the evaluations are its own guesses unless an engine such as Stockfish is connected too.

### How do I use Chess.com with Claude without installing anything?

Add a remote connector by URL. Chess Coach, for example, is added in Claude under Customize → Connectors with https://chess-coach-246271308938.europe-west1.run.app/mcp, then reads your finished Chess.com games and reviews them with Stockfish.
